Ünal Tanık was the executive director of the now-closed Rota Haber website. He was detained on 17 January 2017 on the charge of “being affiliated with FETO media organisation”. He was remanded in custody on 18 January 2017. The indictment charged Tanık with “membership of an armed terrorist organisation”. The prosecution demanded that Tanık be sentenced to imprisonment of between five years and 10 years. He was sentenced to imprisonment of seven years and six months on charges of “membership of an armed terrorist organisation” at the end of the trial process on 8 March 2018. The ruling was approved by the court of appeals and overturned by the Court of Cassation. Tanık was released on 15 June 2020 by the ruling of the court that conducted the retrial. Tanık is currently undergoing retrial without remand.
