Gökçe Fırat Çulhaoğlu was a writer for the Türksolu magazine. He was detained on 31 August 2016 on allegations of “being affiliated with FETO media structure”. He was placed in custody on allegations of “knowingly and willingly aiding the armed organisation despite not being a part of its hierarchical structure” on 3 September 2016. The indictment charged Çulhaoğlu with “membership of an armed organisation”. The prosecution demanded that Çulhaoğlu be sentenced to imprisonment of between five years and 10 years. He was released at the first hearing of the trial on 31 March 2017. Çulhaoğlu was again placed in custody the same day as part of a new investigation. The second indictment charged him with “attempting to destroy the constitutional order” and “attempting to destroy the government”. The prosecution demanded that Çulhaoğlu be sentenced to two aggravated life sentences. At the end of the trial process, Çulhaoğlu was sentenced to imprisonment of six years and three months on the charge of “membership of an armed terrorist organisation”. The ruling that was approved by the court of appeals was overturned by the Court of Cassation. Çulhaoğlu was released on 15 June 2020 by a ruling of the same court that had previously sentenced him to imprisonment. He had been in prison for three years and 10 months when he was released. Çulhaoğlu being retried without remand.
Gökmen Ulu was the İzmir correspondent for the Sözcü Newspaper. He was tried in the scope of the “FETÖ/PDY investigation” on May 26, 2017. Ulu was released in the first hearing of the trial on Nov. 8, 2017. His prosecution continues. At the end of the trial he was sentenced to 1 year 13 months of imprisonment for the accused crimes. The verdict was upheld by the court of appeal, and now the appeal process continues at the Court of Cassation.
Güray Tekin Öz is a journalist since 1971. He was prosecuted in the Cumhuriyet trial and spent 9 months in jail. He was convicted for “aiding a terrorist organization, though not belonging to the structure of that organisation” and sentenced to 3 years 9 months of prison. After the Court of Appeal approved the verdict, he had to return to prison for the remaining 1 year 23 day of his sentence. The Court of Cassation reversed the decision about Güray Tekin Öz along with all the other defendants of Cumhuriyet Newspaper. Güray Tekin Öz was released on Sept. 12, 2019. However in the retrials, court decided to persist against the Court of Cassation’s decision to overturn.
