Vahit Yazgan was the Aegean Region Representative of the now-closed Zaman newspaper. He was detained in Izmir on 8 August 2016 on charges of “membership of an armed terrorist organisation”. He was placed in custody on 25 August 2016 on the same charges. The indictment charged Yazgan with “founding or commanding an armed terrorist organisation” on 28 February 2018. At the end of the trial he was sentenced to imprisonment of eight years and nine months on charges of “membership of an armed terrorist organisation”. The decision was approved by the court of appeals and the Court of Cassation. He has been serving his prison sentence in Izmir No.1 F Type Closed Prison since August 2016.
